유소년 축구의 새싹들
관내 초등학교에서 유일하게 축구부를 육성하고 있는 연동초등학교는 ‘슬기롭게 배우고, 스스로 실천하는 아이들의 배움터’ 이다. 특히 박홍기 교장의 축구부 사랑은 뜨겁다. 열악한 조건에서도 각종대회에 우수한 성적을 거둘 수 있는 힘은 박 교장의 열정 때문이다. 물론 관계기관의 지원도 있긴 하지만 턱없이 모자란다.
윤수빈(6학년)주장을 포함하여 20명으로 구성된 연동초등학교 축구부는 각종 대회에서 상위권을 놓친 적이 없는 실력 있는 팀이다. 제2의 박지성을 꿈꾸는 아이들의 조련은 최 훈 감독이 맡고 있다. 최 감독은 청소년국가대표 출신으로 ‘축구 교과서’로 불릴 만큼 정교한 감독이다.
8년 동안 감독을 맡을 수 있었던 것은 실력도 있지만 그보다 지도자의 자질이 충분하기 때문이라는 것이 학부모들의 평가이다. 최 감독은 전화통화에서 축구에 대한 관심을 조명했다. 특히 초등학교 축구 발전의 인프라구축이 시급하다며, 지역주민의 관심과 지원을 부탁하기도 했다.
“시설부분에 있어서는 타 지역에 크게 뒤지지는 않다. 또 얼마 전 목포축구센터 개장과 더불어 목포시청 축구팀이 창단함으로써 아이들에게 꿈과 희망이 생겼다.”는 것이 최 감독의 설명이다. “하지만 아무리 시설이 좋고 축구를 잘 해도 주역주민의 관심이 없다면 그들만의 리그일 뿐”
국민적인 스포츠 축구, 특히 유소년 축구에 대한 관심을 부탁하는 학부모 한수석 씨의 목소리가 커졌다.
